The Happy Side

We decided to go to San Miguel for the Thanksgiving Holiday.  It was a last minute decision and well worth it.

I've kept a home in Real de Catorce for 17 years now, and realized that it had been a good while since I was in San Miguel.  I thought it might have been 20 years or so, but it turns out it has been almost 30 years since I've had the pleasure of seeing that disneyesque church named after the Archangel Michael.

Much like the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, the San Miguel Cathedral gets spotty architectural reviews.  However, as the Sagrada was designed by the world famous Catalan architect Antonio Gaudi, the Parroquia de San Miguel Arcangel was apparently built by a nobody mason.  Whereas Gaudi never finished, the mason builder did.

Both are world class UNESCO sites.

One of the reasons I avoided San Miguel for so many years was because of the Americans.  There were just too many of them.  Maybe some of them left, or maybe I'm not so snotty in my older days, but I found the town to be a lot of fun and full of good food and good hotels.

The relatively new Rosewood down by the Benito Juarez Park is perhaps the best hotel in Mexico.

We stayed in a great condo a block away from the church on Aldama street.  About 100 feet from our front door was an outdoor restaurant that served great breakfast and Don Julio Tequila.  The sign in front said,

"Keep Calm...You are on the Fun Side of the Trump wall."

And in between the walking, the eating, and the drinking, we did just that.

Here's a quick look:
