Waiting

For the last several days,

thousands upon thousands of travelers of our globe,

have spent anywhere from an hour

to almost a day,

sitting on the bridges, roads, and highways,

of our neighbor to the south.

Waiting.

Waiting as border guards do their job.

They carefully size you up

and measure your integrity.

They hit the sides of your car with little clubs.

They ask you to open the trunk.

They might look under your hood.

If you are really unlucky,

They will make you pull over to the side.

There, you will take every bag and cooler,

and put it on their stainless steel benches,

so they might peruse through what you have worn,

for the last 2 weeks.

If you are unlucky in a stellar way,

Well, you don't even want to know.

Meanwhile, thousands wait.

When the minutes turn into hours,

you stop your car and push it forward,

so you don't run out of gas or get overheated.

Fortunately, it is downhill.

When you drive out of this country,

you will just drive into theirs freely.

When you and anyone else comes back,

You wait at the gate.

We do this to defend ourselves from drugs,

and from the bad guys I guess.

But as we all know,

It is pure political theatre.

It is our great Wall.

Now, the Congress is going to fund a real wall.

So we can keep the hordes out.

So we can keep those people who do the work,

from doing the work, I suppose.

Then, we will all be waiting.

For our food to be cooked.

For our houses to be built.

For our roads to be paved.

For our democracy to crumble.

And our freedom to go south.

And don't these people also vote democratic?

Any society that would give up a little liberty

to gain a little security

will deserve neither

and lose both.

Benjamin Franklin

And they might even X-Ray your vehicle and find a dozen hard boiled eggs.
