Bright Earth

*
Here is part of a post by DB at Eschaton.

"That is right up until the very last moment when, after someone brought up the question of the whether the Democrats will be able to present an effective alternative to Bush in the next election, Joe Klein shouted out, “Well they won’t if their message is that they hate America—which is what has been the message of the liberal wing of the part for the past twenty years.”

Excuse me, but I think this is worth some attention. It’s not about Klein per se, who after all, is best known to most Americans as the guy who lost his job at both Newsweek and CBS News for purposely misleading editors, readers and viewers in order to increase his own personal profit as the allegedly “anonymous” author of “Primary Colors.” (He also [classily] attacked the reputation of the linguist who figured out his identity in New York Magazine.)

What is important, however, is the fact that Time is America’s highest circulation newsweekly. And since it fired Margaret Carlson, Joe Klein, believe it or not, is its most liberal columnist.

That’s right. The most liberal columnist at the America’s largest weekly newsmagazine pretends that the message of liberals for the past twenty years has been that they “hate America,” just as if he were reading from talking points issued by Karl Rove, Rush Limbaugh or Ann Coulter. (Don’t get me started.)

Once again I am forced to say, “What the hell is going on here?”

Well, what is going on here?

Perhaps, a lot of dishonesty.

I don't know about you, but if you don't hate America right now,

why don't you?

We torture,

We overthrow democraticly elected governments,

We kill and murder 100s of thousands of innocent humans,

so that we can control the natural resources that they possess,

And we do it in the name of the higher principles we should hold dear.

We have a democracy that is in shambles.

Votes aren't counted accurately anymore.

The poor are excluded in oh so many ways.

We even vote on a work day instead of over the weekend.

Our news is now firmly under the thumb of corporate hegemony.

We are leading the world towards calamity in our position on

Climate Change.

We are misleading our citizens about our declining natural resource base.

We continue to perpetuate the capitalist myth of perpetual growth.

We have deified Capital.

We rule the world through fear instead of hope.

We bully our allies and alienate those who would be.

We take our lies to the UN and solemnly swear over them.

Meanwhile we bug the phone calls of their diplomats.

We imprison without trials.

We imprison the poor.

We imprison the drug addicted.

We imprison our political enemies.

We execute the insane.

We discuss the next pseudo-election power grab,

instead of the real issues.

We allow the rich to grant themselves tax relief,

while the poor fight for their lives at home and abroad.

We type on our little keyboards while babies by the millions starve.

Exactly, "What the Hell IS going on here"?

So what exactly is there not to hate?

While I was walking in Wenceslas Square in Prague a few weeks ago,

where the Velvet Revolution turned back the Paper Fist of Moscow,

I saw a young teenage girl with a patch on her backpack.

She was dressed in green, all grungy like, perhaps with dreadlocks.

The patch simply said,

Fv(k your Nationality.

As long as liberals won't admit that this America should be hated,

As long as the best of our bloggers loves his nation more than his

spaceship,

As long as the best and brightest among us

are afraid to say, or even worse, don't know that this country sucks

and that nationalism itself sucks,

and that almost all of our other institutions and beliefs must be seriously

reexamined and retooled,

We will continue to have the poverty, the injustice,

the violence, the destruction, the suffering, the hunger,

the exploitation, and the growing contractions of liberty,

Most of us wish to eliminate.

If we want to be free, equal, understanding, clear Citizens

of a good and prosperous and bright earth,

We need to be honest.

about why this one is not.

You speak the truth. Would be it that more Americans could hear you, understand, and act on the truth.

Read the Fall of Rome... similar circumstances, Atilla was the Nuke. Then there is that Tower of Babble story.Everyone talking and no one listening or hearing anything. Seems that we are back there again. Thing just never really change much the cast changes. The script remains the same. Rich screw the poor to get richer, Stong screw the weak. Where is that damn arc when we need it...Indiana?

I guess if you were to ask me If I hate America, I would respond by saying that I hate the current incarnation that we are in.

I hate what we have become and yet I love the opportunity to change things if we can a look deeply and clearly at the issues - ll the issues.

I think that you just named them all and then some. The best and the brightest and the most compassionate of us should hate what we have become if we expect to change things.

The conservative response is always if you hate it why don't you leave it.

My response is that I hate what we have become and I love this country enough to stand up, speak my truth, risk being stoned and fight for what it can again become.

So, Good on you for speaking your truth.

To the nationalists who claim their little corner of earth and tell others to leave it if they don't love it....

"Earth...get it or get off of it."

not catch enough I suppose, I'll keep working on it.

America is a nation filled with human beings. The atrocities committed in America's names are committed by the usual suspects that you will find anywhere there is power. The America that I love is partly in the Constitution, a miraculous document with good intent and clear language that forced more egalitarianism than the white, male, landed, slave-owning framers could have possibly envisioned for this country. The other part of America that I love is the people here who believe in what that document promises: respect for basic human rights and dignity under the protection of law.

There are many Americans who, in fact, do not believe in the Constitution, including many currently in power. They believe that might makes right, a tragic mistake in history that threatens our very survival. What they believe is not the America I love. The America I love, loves true democracy and openness, wherever they are to be found, and the Americans that I hold dear believe that all human beings are, in fact, created free and equal. It is these Americans that must work together with our partners all over the world to contine the dream of respect for human beings everywhere. When being human is seen as our common identity and road to survival, then our particular brand name will matter less than it does now.

Addendum
I have dwelt on this post for a few weeks. Since I wrote the two paragraphs above, I watched a cable TV show about the Pequot massacre, one of the first colonial American experiments experiments in Native American genocide. On the show an African-American/Pequot descendant was interviewed. and stated, more or less, that despite genocide and slavery, that he still cherished his country and the ideal of "free and equal." There is still something here to love.
