Authoritarian Personalities
Last night, I watched in horror as a Blitzkrieg of War Pimping marched across the Main Stream Media. I watched as the reporting of the Israeli response for the kidnapping of 2 Israeli soldiers, which has resulted in the bombing of the International Airport in Beirut, the blockading of their ports, the bombing of highways, and the death of the 60 or so innocent civilians, centered on Iran and Syria as the puppeteers and provocateurs of this new dangerous escalation of violence.
I watched as one MSNBC talking head, who really should be working in the White House, questioned the Syrian Ambassador.
She was totally without response when the Ambassador asked "if the loss of life of a Lebanese civilian was not just as tragic as the loss of an Israeli."
I don't think she thought it was.
Which brings me to another MSNBC interview.
Here is John Dean on Countdown promoting his new book, Conservatives without Conscience. (the transcript is from a right wing site, so read the comments if you can)
Olbermann: "What did you find? In less than 200 pages that the book goes to?"
Dean: "I ran into a massive study that had really been going on for 50 years now, by academics, they've never really shared this with the general public.
It's remarkable analysis of the authoritarian personality, both those who are inclined to follow leaders and those who jump in front and want to be the leaders. It was not the opinion of social scientists.
It was information they drew by questioning large numbers of people, hundreds of thousands of people, in anonymous testing where they conceded, you know, their innermost feelings and reactions to things.
And it turned out that these people were, most of these that came out in the testing were people who had been prequalified to be conservatives, and then they found that this indeed fit with the authoritarian personality."
Olbermann: "Does it really, do the studies indicate that it really has anything to do with the political point-of-view? Is it, would it be easier to essentially superimpose authoritarianism over the right than it would the left?
Is it theoretically possible that they could have gone in either direction and it's just a question of people who like to follow other people?"
Dean: "They have found really maybe a small, one percent of the left who follow authoritarianism, probably the far left. But as far as widespread testing, it is just overwhelmingly conservative orientation."
So what it is this Authoritarian Personality?
Here is the History from Wikepedia.
Although the first usage of the term "authoritarian personality" goes back to Abraham Maslow in 1943, whose work in turn rests upon Erich Fromm's theory of the authoritarian character, in its essentials it has been marked by the 1950 study The Authoritarian Personality by Theodor W. Adorno, Else Frenkel-Brunswik, Daniel J. Levinson and R. Nevitt Sanford.
Conducted at the University of California at Berkeley, the study was part of a large research project aimed at examining the psychological bases of anti-Semitic prejudices.
Theory of the Authoritarian Personality
Those persons who cling to fascist ideologies, according to the theory, distinguish themselves through their inappropriate, prejudice-laden view of social and political relationships. From this background in their personal history arose the assumption that the emergence of certain phenomena such as anti-Semitism and ethnocentrism stands in close connection with this particular personality structure.
The instrument for assessing the underlying authoritarian personality structure was the so-called F-Scale ("implicit antidemocratic tendencies and fascist potential"). This scale is comprised of the following subscales:
Conventionalism -- the tendency to accept and obey social conventions and the rules of authority figures; adherence to the traditional and accepted
Authoritarian Submission -- submission to authorities and authority figures
Authoritarian Aggression -- an aggressive attitude towards individuals or groups disliked by authorities; particularly those who threaten traditional values
Anti-Intraception -- rejection of the subjective, imaginative and aesthetic
Substitution and Stereotypy -- superstition, cliché, categorization and fatalistic determinism
Power and Toughness -- identification with those in power, excessive emphasis on socially advocated ego qualities
Destructiveness and Cynicism -- general hostility, putting others down
Projectivity -- the tendency to believe in the existence of evil in the world and to project unconscious emotional impulses outward
Sex -- exaggerated concerns with respect to sexual activity .
Uhh, excuse me, but this pretty much describes the conservatives in my family.
So what are we to make of John Dean's book and this information?
This certainly explains Faux News. It explains Bill O Reily and Rus. It absolutely explains Ann Coulter and the rest of the far right's hate slinging stable of nut cases.
Problem is, they really are nut cases.
They don't have a political philosophy.
They have a personality disorder.
And they and their leaders are leading us to WAR.
After watching the evening War Dance by the Military Industrial Media Complex Talking Heads, I shared my concerns and dismay with the bartender who only speaks in Sports Metaphors.
"Do you think that the Germans thought that they would lose the war?
Do you think that they imagined that their cities would be leveled?"
They had the most powerful military on earth.
They also had a national authoritarian personality disorder.

The US government has been kidnapped by the authoritarian far right.
Hitler came to power with 30%.
And with this same level of support, this adminstration continues. MS
Saw the count down program also - very interesting - when asked what can be done to change this, Dean replied something to the effect that there is no changing the 20% core with this disorder (maybe a few on the fringe can be reasoned with) but the best way to neutralize them is to expose them for what they are and keep them monitored - with all the confusion, fear and blind patriotism following 9/11 the public, press and elected representatives failed to keep a check and balance on the persons entrusted with making public policy - now, as a result of the obvious failings of their policies the public has begun to look more closely at who these people are and what these people are - outing Rove, outing the neo-con agenda, outing Coulter and O'Reilly has made the public more aware of their agendas - one can only hope this understand and holding these people accountable will continue and grow before they can re-write history and law to make it impossible to reverse their destructive policies without an armed rebellion - it has taken all out war to stop most of these totalitarian regimes, however, as with the Soviet Union, they can collapse under their own weight or be over thrown by the public without blood shed as in Portugal - keeping my fingers crossed that this problem will be resolved peacefully.
Oh, BTW, I am not anti-Semitic, but, we will never be able to understand the why and what if we don't take a real hard look at the relationship between the US and Israel and expose the truth - the designers of this failed government (the neo-cons) were principally Jewish - you can delete this post if it is too long but these people need to be exposed -
