MSN will stream the Live Earth concerts LIVE from all seven continents starting from Sydney, Australia and continuing geographically and chronologically across the globe. Log on tonight -- Friday, July 6th -- at 9:15pm (ET) / 6:15pm (PT) (since it's tomorrow already in Australia) for the start of what is destined to be an incomparable 24 hours.

Live Earth marks the beginning of a multi-year campaign led by the Alliance for Climate Protection, The Climate Group and other international organizations to drive individuals, corporations and governments to take action to solve global warming.
Live Earth will stage official concerts at Giants Stadium in New York; Wembley Stadium in London; Aussie Stadium in Sydney; Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro; Maropeng at the Cradle of Humankind in Johannesburg; Makuhari Messe in Tokyo; the Steps of the Oriental Pearl Tower in Shanghai; and HSH Nordbank Arena in Hamburg.
According to what I'm reading, there are over 8000 events in over 130 countries and perhaps 2 billion people will be part of this event.
This is the beginning of the end for the reckless release of carbon.
And just the beginning of our clean energy future.
If a world carbon premium can be invoked.
We just might have a Live Earth
for more than one day.

I have been watching promos for this for a week or so. A great idea. But, will the nay sayers pay attention? The Scrooges will be in their vaults counting their gold. A what of W and Dick? Maybe it doesn't matter what they think or do what matters is that the people understand that this is a crisis and needs to be addressed last year.
Local, city, county, state and the federal governments should be first to "go green." Politicians should not be elected to public office unless they agree to convert every government building and vehicle to renewable energy. There are at least three reasons why this should be so.
When all levels of government are taken into account, they control 40% of the economy. With that kind of economic incentive anyone who wants to sell to the government will hasten to meet the demands of its largest single buyer. Government will no longer have to pass laws to enforce cafe standards for instance. Rather the Government will simply tell auto companies, we want to replace our fleet of vehicles but will not buy anything that does get at least 50 mpg if it is gasoline based, or it must be a hybrid, or it must be fueled with renewable fuels.
Another reason Government should go green first is national security. Part of every oil dollar paid for Middle Eastern oil goes directly into the pocket of terrorists. If we convert to renewable fuels that we control, we defund terrorism and protect ourselves simultaneously.
Yet another reason to heed Al Gore’s clarion call on global warming is economic security. OPEC can not ruin our economy if we convert to renewable fuels that we control.
And finally, suppose Gore is right? When anyone hypes anything as much as AL Gore hypes global warming, I have my doubts. But I can’t see what is harmed by going green so why not? The military is doing some research on alternative and renewable energy. Whoever is the next president of the United States should institute a “Go Green or Go Home” policy for the military. Those who come up with energy saving devices or methods as well as those who implement alternative or renewable fuels should rise quickly through the ranks. Those who don’t should be encouraged to seek employment elsewhere. As resourceful as marines are, for instance, I would bet they could make surprising advances in fueling everything from jeeps to an entire base through alternative means if left to their own devices. The military has through it’s contractors developed the most effective weapons in the world. If this same level of effort is turned toward greening the military we will be a safer, more secure, and more independent nation. We will create new jobs and industries and the air and water will get cleaner as a benefit.

You make a very good point about the government as a market and user of energy. Currently under the Federal Energy Policy Act of 2005, the Federal Gov is required to source 7% of its building energy use from renewables. That is a paltry low amount. It should be more like 30 - 50%.
Local governments are doing much better - the city of Portland now has a 100% renewable target.
The military is an active developer of renewable energy, in large part because military fuel transport vehicles and supply lines are such vulnerable targets for attack. The military wants remote on-site generation. Price is no issue, as security is the priority. Army representatives discussed this at the June ACORE/ABA monthly teleconference.
Another market discussed at the ACORE meeting is Universities. In June, Universities across the country signed a climate agreement.
An example of university market power was Los Angeles Community College. The college issued bids for "green" environmentally friendly carpeting. The purchase was $87 Million! It drove local carpet manufacturers to production, creating the market.
