Wave the Flags

Here is a nice bit on flags and empires.

and here is a commentary by USA Today founder Al Neuharth,

on the best way to support the troops.

Bring them home.

Like Johnson said,

"If I have lost Walter Cronkite,

I have lost middle America."

USA Today is not Cronkite,

but its not exactly the Socialist Workers Party either.

And here is Tom Brokaw speaking the obvious,

it's about the oil.

When we plant our flags around the globe,

in the name of our most valued and hallowed principles,

freedom,

justice,

equality,

as a smoke screen to hide the machinations of economic colonialism,

to enhance our economic well being and our strategic positioning,

at the expense of those we claim to help,

we invite the ridicule of our friends,

and we empower our enemies.

And the flag becomes a symbol of hypocrisy,

not democracy.

It becomes a symbol of dominance,

not liberation.

It becomes a symbol of hatred,

not good will.

And the whole earthfamily suffers.

When the hope of the nations,

becomes an empire of darkness and corruption,

it is time to wave the flags,

goodbye.

And time to embrace the earth.

Oh come now.

Flags are really cool.
At Easter you have a bunny rabbit flag.
At Halloween a pumpkin flag.
At Christmas a Santa flag.
At Guy Fawkes a Fawke flag.
And there are Uiniversity of Texas flags, LSU flags, Texas Tech flags. In Fredericksburg yesterday I saw a store that sells all manner of flags. Christian flags and schools flags and of course no Arab flags or Muslim flags.

One of my favorite flags is the Zimbawhe falg with an AK 47 on it. And the French flag is neat. Flags really do tell you something about the person who is flying it.

Last night my pals in Leakey and I must have shot off $600 or more woth of fireworks and it was really fun. The excuse was the flag.

There were rednecks, latinos and couple of African Americans an Apache and five his kids about twenty other kids blowing stuff up into the wee hours of the night.

We were scaring the bee jeezus out of the dogs and cats but creating another generation of explosive lovers to go along with ours. Fireworks, flags and martial music. The Jambox and highest volume playing American marches while everyone ate BBQ and drank copious amounts of beer, no wine allowed. Lots and lots of grease and hand cranked ice cream. It was Oh so Republican and Oh so American.

We had long conversations about Cherry Bombs and M-80's and Baby Giants and how todays kids are so protected for the fun we had. AS we t alked the were shooting screamers, some sort of large bottle rockets at each other. The adults of course would yell, "Be careful, now." "Aim over their heads."

The big air burst thingies would occasionally blow up on the ground and cause gales of cheering and laughter and more, "Be careful now."

Damn the FOURTH of JULY is so much fun. You just ingnore the politica and get drunk and blow things up.

There may be a hangover though.
