Space Invaders

The thing that I always liked about space movies is their meta message.

Forget whether its a meteor or invaders from Mars,

or even another Galaxy.

The message behind the message, the meta message is this:

The World learns to come together and cooperate

to win the battle against the attacking force.

It is the "extraterrestrial" that brings the earth together.

It forces us to transcend our little nationalistic divisions.

In the last couple of days, I found myself saying that the one good thing

about Climate Change

is that it will bring the world to a new understanding.

Climate Change and for that matter Peak Oil,

will require the best of our natures and the best of our abilities.

Climate Change will demand a level of cooperation between the

artificial creatures of the political memes that divide us

no differently that an invading force from Alpha Omegan.

The only difference is that this time,

the unifying force is not from another planet,

it is our own ignorance, our own greed, and our own lack of love

that is coming to attack us with a strength and might,

that will make a Steven Spielberg production look lame.

In the next 90 days or so,

polls will begin to show that even Americans,

with all of the propaganda from the most twisted minds,

with all of the disinformation from Exxon Mobile,

with all of the corporate shaping that money does buy,

Even the Americans will believe that there is no more time to lose.

Even the Americans will come to believe that we must act now.

As the percent of the "seriously concerned" swings from 40% now,

to 60% in just a matter of months,

all kinds of things will happen.

Congress will pass another energy bill for solar, nuclear, and clean coal.

They will pass whatever they can to not look like who they are,

Incompetent out-of- touch power junkies,

who will say anything and promise everything

to get their next fix.

Left wing nationalists will continue to talk about what America needs,

and why the right is so wrong,

But, until they let go of their archaic memes of nationalism,

they will be just as wrong as the right,

and perhaps more insidious.

Climate Change and the other great forcing issues of our time,

cannot be defeated or even adapted to

until we see that we are all sailors on this spaceship,

and that we have been attacked,

by the archaic notions,

that reside in our lizard brains.

The Space Invaders

have come.

But this time,

It's not a movie.
