Fast-track Hacked

Fast-track Hacked: HR-811:
In spite of support from MoveOn.org and many progressive
organizations for the new voting bill sponsored by Rush Holt,
there is reason to look more closely at changes made in committee
and flaws which threaten the core of our democracy —
1. No Re-counts possible for presidential elections because of time limitations.
2. Electronic voting machines can print a receipt for you, like an ATM
machine, and then internally cook the books. Unlike the ATM
transactions we make all the time, in public voting systems
if there is no hand count of paper ballots at the precinct level
there is no "check" book, no way to insure the total count is right.
3. HR-811 sanctions privatization of the voting process.
4. HH-811 sanctions secret recounts.
Watch these videos today. Behind the huge outrage we all
feel at the Great Dem Sellout on Iraq, and behind the outrage
we all feel seeing our battle ships leering at Iran, there's another
outrage brewing, and progressives need to look hard at this and
reverse our message engines, fast.
It looks like HR-811 has been hacked,
fast-track hacked because the vote is likely to pass as early
as June 5, leaving us stuck with a huge erosion of democracy,
possibly the final blow at the same time announcing to
us that our voting system is now fixed, another mission accomplished.

This is so inaccurate it's hard to know where to begin.
Holt's bill of COURSE allows recounts in presidential elections!
Geez. I'm shocked how few activists - and I'm naming names here - Bev Harris, Brad Friedman of BradBlog, Nancy Tobi, Paul Lehto, and others have actually READ and understood accurately the text of Holt's bill HR 811 as it stands today.
Here's the link. Since your fellow activists are LYING to you about what's in it, you're going to have to read it yourself. It won't take you more than an hour and a half.
This bill is our best hope for reclaiming our vote. If you sink this NO ONE ELSE will take up this issue. Holt's bill has huge sponsorship, not because they're all evil or fools, but because it's a damn well written bill, especially in its post-committee form.
Read the latest version of the bill, and read the responses to common misinformation put out by people who have proven themselves inaccurate to the point of dishonest on this bill.
Our vote IS at risk. And HR 811 IS, in fact, the best solution. But don't take my word for it. READ THE BILL YOURSELF.
Here is the section of the law that refers to presidential elections. The problem is not that audits aren't allowed, it is that they would have to be done so fast it would be impossible to do them. Hence the problem. I'll change the language to make this more clear.
and add a link to a mark up of the bill as it came from committee on march 8 -- for those of you who like to delve into specifics.
SB
"(2) DEADLINE FOR COMPLETION OF AUDITS OF PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS.—In the case of an election for electors for President and Vice President which is subject to an audit under this subtitle, the State shall complete the audits and announce and submit the results to the Commission for publication of the information required under this section in time for the State to certify the results of the election and provide for the final determination of any controversy or contest concerning the appointment of such electors prior to the deadline described in section 6 of title 3, United States Code.

This link has detailed analysis of all the problems with Holt's bill. The division in the movement is not helping solve the problem. Holt's bill continues the use of fraudulent electronic voting machines. There is no place for electronic counting in a democracy. Audits and recounts are problematic. No bill is better than this bad bill which gives us a false sense of security.
