The vote at the UN a few days ago was a momentous and disconcerting occasion. This from CNN:

"The United States joined Russia to vote against a UN General Assembly resolution condemning Russia’s war against Ukraine Monday in a stunning shift from years of US policy.

The vote against the Ukrainian and European-backed resolution saw the US at odds with its longtime European allies and instead aligned with the aggressor in the war on the three-year anniversary of Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine."

The vote in the General Assembly was 93 FOR, 16 NO, and 65 abstentions.  Other NOs were North Korea and Belarus.  China, India, Iran, and Iraq did not vote on the issue.

"The US again voted the same way as Russia later Monday on a US-proposed UN Security Council resolution that did not call the Kremlin the aggressor or acknowledge Ukraine’s territorial integrity. The resolution passed without the support of five European members of the Security Council" 

Note, Great Britain and France, the two European permanent members of the Security Council did not veto the resolution which is perplexing if not revealing.

The US’ shocking alignment with Russia at the United Nations came as the Trump administration has pursued discussions with Moscow about ending the war. 

But not only did the US do a 180 on Ukraine at the UN, we announced through our Fox News Weekend Host now Secretary of Defense that we now oppose Ukraine's entry into NATO.  And in the last few days it appears that Zelenskyy will respond to our immoral blackmail for their natural resources in trade for some security agreement with the US. Oddly, most of the resources we want are actually in Russian controlled Ukraine, so Zelenskyy is giving up resources he currently does not even have.

Putie Pute, the KGB operative and  Russian dictator, is  obviously toasting his gains in his gold Kremlin opulence with the success of his 38 year old  Russian asset named Krasnov. 

According to Newspapers in Europe and Asia, Krasnov's name was revealed by a former KGB operative named Mussayev:

In 1987, I worked in the 6th Department of the KGB of the USSR in Moscow. The most important area of ​​work of the 6th Department was the acquisition of spies and sources of information from among businessmen of capitalist countries. It was in that year that our Department recruited the 40-year-old businessman from the USA, (DJDrumph), nicknamed "Krasnov".

This from the Kiev Independent:

"Questions about U.S. President's possibly shady relationship with Russia and the country's security services have long swirled, even culminating in a special counsel investigation during his first term in office.

Though that investigation found evidence of "extensive criminal activity" by Drumph, his associates, and some of his family members, it found no evidence that he was working for, or had ever been recruited by, Russia's security services."

Yet despite this, the topic refuses to go away.

Craig Unger, an American journalist and writer who has written two books on Drumph’s connections to Russia’s security services and the Russian mafia stretching all the way back to the 1980s, says he is "absolutely certain" that the U.S. president is a Russian asset. 

People are shocked today that Drumph is betraying Ukraine, he's betraying Europe, he's siding with Putin. Well, he did it as early as 1987, when he was starting to run for the presidency in 1988. And that is very well documented, it was printed in the NYT.

It's exactly the foreign policy he is acting out today that is so horrifying. This is the end of NATO, it's the end of the Western alliance. Drumph is allying with Vladimir Putin, and against Ukraine and all of Western Europe.

And with the help of his henchmen and the R's it will be the end of Democracy as we know it. 

As Jerry Garcia once said, someone has got to do something, and it's incredibly pathetic that it's us.

But if you boil this all down to the fundamentals, we just need 3 Rs in the House to vote for impeachment and 21 R's in the Senate to convict to get rid of Krasnov once and for all.  And why we are at it, we make it clear to Mr. Hillbilly Elegy that he's next if he doesn't change his ways.

And then we have to solve some real problems.  Like how are we to manage our $36 Trillion debt  that is now about a trillion dollars in annual interest. That is slightly more than we pay for the biggest most deadly war making force in the universe.  (hopefully)

And before we allow the richest nation in the universe to increase the hurt to its poor through medicaid cuts,  headstart stops, and whatever else must be chopped off by the richest of the rich in order for our ruling plutocracy to get a renewal of their tax breaks, we need to think about that. And we need to ask ourselves "why does the Nation have any debt"?

If our  National banking system is allowed to create money in our fractional reserve banking rules, why can't the government do the same? 

We can.

We just need to see that the National Debt from a different perspective.  Why should the bankers and the well healed profit off the National Debt when the nation needs to care for those at the bottom of the ladder while defending all of us from those who plunder and subjugate? Why can we not have  affordable health care and life enhancing opportunity for us all ?

Maybe we shouldn't raise the debt ceiling.

And stop paying interest on our own money

Oh you say, Inflation.

We've got that already.

In case you've been in a semi-comatose state due to the extreme heat or the extreme flooding or the truly unparalled state of affairs in general, you might not know that the former POTUS was indicted by Special Counsel Jack Smith this week. You probably do know, but you might not have read the actual indictment.

Here's the first couple of pages. It's a pretty easy read:

INTRODUCTION

1. The Defendant, DONALD J . TRUMP, was the forty-fifth President of the United States and a candidate for re-election in 2020. The Defendant lost the 2020 presidential election.

2. Despite having lost, the Defendant was determined to remain in power. So for more than two months following election day on November 3, 2020, the Defendant spread lies that there had been outcome-determinative fraud in the election and that he had actually won. These claims were false, and the Defendant knew that they were false. But the Defendant repeated and widely disseminated them anyway—to make his knowingly false claims appear legitimate, create an intense national atmosphere of mistrust and anger, and erode public faith in the administration of the election.

3. The Defendant had a right, like every American, to speak publicly about the election and even to claim, falsely, that there had been outcome-determinative fraud during the election and that he had won. He was also entitled to formally challenge the results of the election through lawful and appropriate means, such as by seeking recounts or audits of the popular votein states or filing lawsuits challenging ballots and procedures. Indeed, in many cases, the Defendant did pursue these methods of contesting the election results. His efforts to change the outcome in any state through recounts, audits, or legal challenges were uniformly unsuccessful.

4. Shortly after election day, the Defendant also pursued unlawful means of discounting legitimate votes and subverting the election results. In so doing, the Defendant perpetrated three criminal conspiracies:

a. A conspiracy to defraud the United States by using dishonesty, fraud, and
deceit to impair, obstruct, and defeat the lawful federal government function
by which the results of the presidential election are collected, counted, and
certified by the federal government, in violation of 18 U.S.C. § 371;

b. A conspiracy to corruptly obstruct and impede the January 6 congressional proceeding at which the collected results of the presidential election are counted and certified ("the certification proceeding"), in violation of 18 U.S.C. § 1512(k);and

c. A conspiracy against the right to vote and to have one's vote counted, in violation of 18 U.S.C. § 241.

Each of these conspiracies—which built on the widespread mistrust the Defendant was creating through pervasive and destabilizing lies about election fraud—targeted a bedrock function of the United States federal government: the nation's process of collecting, counting, and certifying the results of the presidential election ("the federal government function")."

6. From on or about November 14, 2020, through on or about January 20, 2021, in the District of Columbia and elsewhere, the Defendant, DONALD J . TRUMP, did knowingly combine, conspire, confederate, and agree with co-conspirators, known and unknown to the Grand Jury, to defraud the United States by using dishonesty, fraud, and deceit to impair, obstruct, and defeat the lawful federal government function by which the results of the presidential election are collected, counted, and certified by the federal government.

Purpose of the Conspiracy

 7. The purpose of the conspiracy was to overturn the legitimate results of the 2020 presidential election by using knowingly false claims of election fraud to obstruct the federal government function by which those results are collected, counted, and certified."

The R's and the R Media will come out and say that this is about free speech. It is not. It is about criminal actions that resulted in an attack on the Capitol with resulting death, casualties, and a deep wound on the National body politic.

The rest of the indictment states the case plainly and effectively.

He and his fellow conspirators for the first time in our nation's history did knowingly combine, conspire, confederate, and agree with co-conspirators to defraud the United States by using dishonesty, fraud, and deceit to impair, obstruct, and defeat the certification of our national election in order to illegally remain in power.

This is not about free speech. 

It's about breaking the Law.

To Spite Your Face

 

In the early years of this blog, I wrote a story about Liberty and Justice.  Now 17 years later, it is remarkably pertinent to our lives and to understanding the forces that are shaping them.

As Covid makes its return to our lives in the form of Delta, we have this remarkable political dialectic where a major party is invoking policies that endanger its own followers.  Rs have adopted a meta strategy where they must oppose the present administration by making its primary goal of defeating the pandemic a failure.  So, the "Right" and its Faux news outlets have adopted a whisper campaign to oppose taking vaccinations, to make masking mandates actually illegal, and to oppose formal vaccination identification and thresholds for businesses, educational institutions, and even cruise ship owners.

It is such a convoluted concoction of irrationality and self destructive behavior it taxes the sane mind. Their embrace of liberty may be on brand, but it also reminds us of the old proverb "to cut off your nose to spite your face"

Liberty and Justice

I pledge Allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

Most of us learned these words before we could write very well. They were written by Francis Bellamy, a Baptist minister. Ironically, he was a Christian Socialist. Originally, although he was a minister, he did not include “under God” in his pledge. Congress added those words in 1954 after an extensive campaign by the Knights of Columbus. Earlier, in 1924, the National Flag Conference, under the leadership of the American Legion and the Daughters of the American Revolution, changed the Pledge's words, “my Flag,” to “the Flag of the United States of America.” Bellamy disliked this change, but his protest was ignored.

It’s fairly short. But it is pretty packed. There is the “Republic” idea for which the country stands. There is the “one nation under God, indivisible” thing. I’m not about to touch that. And then, there is the “liberty and justice for all” thing. It is said the Bellamy would have added “equality”, but at the time of the writing, women still did not have the right to vote.

Since most of us learned these words before we really thought much about anything except maybe how much more attention our younger brother was getting than we were, it’s likely that you haven’t thought much about it since.

I would offer that this country is founded on liberty and justice. These are the two great pillars of the Republic. But, the pillar metaphor is not really a good one. For it seems that liberty and justice come out of the same bucket so to speak. Liberty and Justice are two constituents of a single pillar. They are more like the yin and the yang of the Tao.

Liberty would hold that we should be free to drive down the freeway at whatever speed we choose. Justice would hold that we must drive at a safe speed so that innocent drivers are not injured or killed by your need to drive like an Indy want-to-be. Liberty would hold that we should be free to live as we choose; justice asserts that we must abide by laws that protect us all.

Liberty would hold that we should be able to discharge whatever we want into our air or waters with impunity; justice maintains that these emissions should be regulated to protect the health of those who breath the air and drink the water. Liberty would defend the right to use our private property any way we choose; justice says you can’t build a chemical plant next to an elementary school or a hospital.

Lovers of Liberty value their right to own guns. Lovers of Justice believe that gun manufacturers should be responsible somehow for the natural result of the use of their product. (or should just the bullet manufacturers be responsible?)

Whether the issue is States Rights, a woman’s right to choose, corporate behavior, universal health care, the environment, or the way we choose to build our homes, there is always a tension between liberty and justice.

It is this tension that has made the two party system function so well in this country.

In general, although it has not always been this way, the Republican Party represents Liberty, and the Democrats represent Justice. It is within this tension that good law and good public policy is conceived and implemented. Big business likes the Republicans because they want to be free of regulation. Big labor likes the Democrats because they want justice for their membership. Republicans don’t like big government. Democrats are not supposed to like unregulated corrupt corporations that pollute and steal, and then bribe our leaders to look the other way.

Look at any list of issues and see for yourself. The tension between liberty and justice is the foundation of our two party system and the Republic itself. Those groups outside of the margin on the right are called Libertarians. Those on the left are concerned with environmental justice, social justice and other justice issues. We just don’t call them Justicians.

And, like the yin and the yang of the Tao, one is constantly turning into the other.

To "not be able to use your land the way you intended when you bought it" turns into a justice issue. The justice of equal opportunity turns into a liberty issue for those who suffer from discrimination. It turns into a loss of liberty for those who wish to discriminate (Sometimes for justified reasons)

Republicans view the right to life as a justice issue for the unborn. Democrats see abortion as a woman’s right to choose, a liberty issue.

The tension between Liberty and Justice is the lifeblood of this Republic. The constant turmoil of these two basic rights makes our system work.

The system, however, does not work when those who should be arguing the virtue of their principles argue instead based on their desire to maintain power. Then, the system breaks down.

The President says he wants to “get to the bottom” of a leak from the White House that has revealed the name of a CIA operative. Yet, he has not publicly called for the resignations of those who participated in the crime. He has not called on those journalists who know the names of the perpetrators of the crime to help him preserve the rule of law in his own administration. His sense of justice is therefore subordinated to his need to maintain power.

When Democrats do not pursue justice for fear of the loss of power, we all lose.

When Republicans condone the loss of civil liberty in the name of national security in order to maintain their grip on power, they are abandoning their basic principles. When both sides of the aisle choose to confuse liberation with occupation, we are truly lost.

When we are no longer guided by our great principles, truth becomes a prisoner to the mendacities of power.

And the Republic is endangered.    

 

To cut off your nose to spite your face" is possibly derived from Henry IV who contemplated destroying Paris but soon thought better of it based on advice.

I suspect some Rs are trying to hold onto their own noses.

While the rest of us do the same 

to avoid the stench of their deadly folly.

To be Governed or to be Ruled?

 

 

 

Earthfamilyalpha is now in its 16th year of publication. For many of those years, we published a broad range of stories about politics, technology, climate change, art, the human condition, and consciousness in general.  And I invite you to dig deep into this work that now has more words in it than the Bible.  One of the best ways is to go to the contents pages at the bottom of each post.  Or select a label and see all the stories in that subject.

But over the last five years or so, most of the content has been political.  We've written about energy and climate change and certainly the pandemic when we can, but the political stage has been so daft, that it seems to suck the air out of the clear issues and challenges that face us as a people.

Many years ago, I wrote a piece about Liberty and Justice, and how as we repeat our Pledge of Allegiance that we end it "with Liberty and Justice for all."  My thesis was that Liberty and Justice come out of the same bucket.  That we want the liberty to drive any speed we want, but justice says we must obey the speed limit or we endanger others who might lose their life due to your belief that your liberty is more important than their justice.  From this thesis I made the case that the two party system in this country was effective because the Meta "Rs" in their best aspect represented  "freedom" and the Meta "Ds" represented "justice".  With each party representing these great principals of American values, the parties could vacillate in power as the great pendulum of time worked its way through our history. 

And clearly, we see this today as "Rs" refuse to wear a simple mask in the name of liberty as "Ds" demand that masks be mandated so that justice can be served.  But something more important has occurred in these last five years.  Another Dialectic has developed that is not a great principal, but rather a psychological manifestation of our human condition.

Republicans for years have stated the best government is a small government; that in the words of their previous idol, Ronald Reagan,  “The most terrifying words in the English language are: I'm from the government and I'm here to help.”  Since they don't want government to work well, they get elected in the name of efficiency but often just do their job poorly to prove their point.  Our government's response to the pandemic is a prime example.

Democrats, on the other hand, run on the idea that government, if done well, can be very helpful in developing many of the things we need:  like roads and water and security and freedom from want and fear.

Democrats wish to govern.

Republicans want to rule.

And this unhealthy dialectic is problematic for a functioning democracy.

It's not a big problem if most of the citizens want to be governed, but it is a huge problem if the electorate  actually wants to be ruled; by their party, their strongman, or the hate that has seized them as exacerbated by that party or strongman. It is ever so more dangerous when those who wish to be ruled use their power to disenfranchise those who wish to be governed.

Occurring exactly eighty years after FDR's famous Four Freedoms speech, the events of  January 6th are not a portent of the future.  They are a  manifestation of the present. The last five years have brought us a political landscape of alternative facts.  Alternative facts are lies. 

And as author Timothy Snyder says, "Post-Truth is Pre-Fascism."

A nationalist, 'although endlessly brooding on power, victory, defeat, revenge,' wrote Orwell, tends to be 'uninterested in what happens in the real world.'

Nationalism is relativist, since the only truth is the resentment we feel when we contemplate others. As the novelist Danilo Kiš put it, nationalism 'has no universal values, aesthetic or ethical.'  

A patriot, by contrast, wants the nation to live up to its ideals, which means asking us to be our best selves. A patriot must be concerned with the real world, which is the only place where his country can be loved and sustained. A patriot has universal values, standards by which he judges his nation, always wishing it well—and wishing that it would do better.” 

“The odd American idea that giving money to political campaigns is free speech means that the very rich have far more free speech, and so in effect far more voting power, than other citizens.”  

“Believe in truth. To abandon facts is to abandon freedom. If nothing is true, then no one can criticize power, because there is no basis upon which to do so. If nothing is true, then all is spectacle. The biggest wallet pays for the most blinding lights.” 

Do not be blinded by this light.

In a perfect Union, We become the light.

The Real Bad Guy

We went to the mountains of Mexico towards the end of June.  While in the Austin airport, we bought a copy of the Washington Post version of the Mueller Report.  As usual, as is the case at the beginning of the rainy season in the Sierra Catorces, the days have been rainy and cool; perfect days for reading this 2 1/2 inch, 729 page bible-like edition.

So now, I can finally say that I have read the Mueller Report.  I have also read the indictments of the main characters, the responses of DJT to the OSC's questions, and some other background history gems provided by the Post's authors.

It's a reference book that will be part of World History for generations.

One of the more telling stories is the piece by Mark Fisher and Sari Horwtiz. It's a comparison of how both DJT and Robert Mueller were both born to wealth, raised to lead, and then took sharply different paths in life.

For example, DJT grew up in a 23 room manse in the Queens, a faux Southern plantation house with a Cadillac limousine in the driveway.  In the second grade, he said, "he punched his music teacher in the face." He got into trouble often.  His real estate developing father thus sent him to New York Military Academy where except for being demoted his senior year and relieved of duty as Captain of the barracks, DJT actually thrived for 5 years.

Mueller was born to a social rank that barely exists anymore.  His father was an executive at Dupont. He went to St. Paul's Episcopal school where the Astor, Vanderbilt and Mellon families educated their own boys. Here, Mueller epitomized the Christian strong boy who embodied the values of kindness, respect, and integrity.

When Mueller graduated from Princeton, he enlisted in the Marine Corps.  DJT,  while at the University of Pennsylvania, paid little attention to his course work as he benefited from five draft deferments between 1964 and 1968.  The last one was a 1Y medical deferment for a questionable bone spur.

After Princeton,  Mueller became a war hero. He then spent the next two decades putting bad guys in jail.

After college, DJT perfected the Art of the Deal as he learned to beat the system in his constant craving for power and wealth.  He changed his party registration seven times between 1999 and 2012; he was a democrat twice, a Republican three times and an independent in 2000.

Mueller became the quintessential G Man 

DJT became the ultimate Con-man.

Mueller's report on the behavior of DJT is worthy of a full read.  It allows the reader to get their hands around the serial mendacity and cavalier disregard for truth that permeates this administration. It also makes it clear that the Russian government helped him win the election.

It chooses not to find Conspiracy in the Campaign's behavior, not because they didn't cooperate and accept assistance, but because the Office of Special Counsel feared they could not get a conviction because D.T. Jr. was possibly truly ignorant of the laws regarding foreign influence in our election.

It states that proving  conspiracy was hindered by a lack of cooperation with the OSC.  Many critical documents and emails were not handed over, often because they were auto-deleted.

Read the last 20 pages of Volume I starting at page 180.

Volume II is worth a full read.  It details the mind and thinking of DJT as he fights to get out of another jam. Each of the major accounts of obstruction  follow a prosecutorial discussion of (1) the obstructive act, (2) a nexus to an official proceeding, and (3) intent.  To any non-biased observer, these are slam dunks for any prosecutor appealing to a jury of peers.

Start at page 156 if you must, but don't miss the conclusion on page 182.  "If we had confidence after a thorough investigation of the facts that the President clearly did not commit obstruction of justice, we would so state"

In a few weeks, Robert Swan Mueller will testify before two committees in the House.  DJT and his Republican cohorts will do their best to make him look like a bad guy.

But we know who the real bad guy is.

The Americans

It wasn't until its last season that I started watching the Americans.  In an age where the actual president is being investigated as a possible asset of a foreign power, watching the escapades of two Russian spies living just outside of Washington with their two kids chumming it up with the FBI agent who lives across the street seemed more than just plausible. I watched all 75 episodes in less than 2 months.

Set in the early eighties during the Reagan Administration, the series focuses on the personal and professional lives of the Jennings family, two deep cover Soviet agents placed in the DC area almost 20 years before.  According to one of the producers, the series works different levels of reality: the fictional world of the marriage between Philip and Elizabeth, and the brutal spy world that the characters live in.

Both characters are marvelously capable of changing their appearance with simple wigs and clothing.  Even though both are committed communists, Elizabeth has the most revulsion of the American capitalist system.  Philip on the other hand, likes driving his hot muscle car and playing racket ball at the health club with his FBI neighbor.  It's not important TV but it is somehow relevant in our present world.

First, Philip and Elizabeth are truly afraid that Reagan will annihilate their countrymen.  They are keenly aware that Reagan was trading arms with the contras while illegally dealing with the Iranians, and that the Americans (with a few exceptions) are often liars and untrustworthy.

Second, they really believe that their system is better for the world, that the ideas behind their revolution are better ideas than the ideas of pure unfettered capitalism.

Today, we have a government that is even more corrupt than the Reagan era.  It is erasing gains in the environment, in social justice, and in consumer protections.  It doesn't seem to recognize that Congress is an equal branch of government.  It is  contorting and abusing the Judicial system by appointing judges that cannot garner 60 votes in the Senate, so they are confirmed with bare majorities.

And like the Reagan era, they have little relationship with the Truth.  According to the Washington Post, they have spun over 10,000 lies in less than a 1000 days. And most importantly, they have spun the Mueller Report as an exoneration of their acceptance and use of Russian aid, all the while overtly subverting the investigation.

They argue that since there was not enough evidence of conspiracy to get a conviction, then there could not possibly be the crime of obstruction because there was no underlying crime.  I would argue that exactly the opposite is true.  If you read the Mueller Report, it is clear that not only was there purposeful obstruction and lack of cooperation by the administration, the obstruction was clearly successful in  minimizing and obfuscating their many acts of cooperation with the Russians.

One could argue that they cooperated more with the Russians than they did with Mueller.

The Soviet Union that Philip and Elizabeth risked their lives to defend passed away by the early nineties, the day after Christmas in 1991.  On the previous day, December 25th, Soviet President Mikhael Gorbachev, the 8th and final leader of the USSR resigned, declared his office extinct and handed over its powers, including the  launch codes, to the new Russian President Boris Yeltsin.  That evening at 7:32 pm, the Soviet flag was lowered from the Kremlin for the last time and replaced with the pre-revolutionary Russian flag.

Everyone was giddy.  The Berlin wall fell.  The Americans had won the Cold War.

Democracy was alive in Russia.

But within a few years, it became clear that Yeltsin was not just an alcoholic, he was a boorish clown.  And a young KGB spy named Putin rose up to create a new Kleptocracy.

And in the 2016 election, the Pluto-Kleptocracies became one. And the same attorney general who got pardons for the Reagan administration is back defending his boss instead of the country.

And, we are  The Americans.

Your Pledge

I pledge allegiance to The Constitution of the United States of America and to the Republic for which this flag stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

One day, hopefully, the pledge can be changed to reflect the fact that The Constitution is the foundational bedrock of this country, while still acknowledging the importance of the flag.

Until that time, I intend to make my pledge to The Constitution and the Republic directly, a right guaranteed by the First Amendment.

What we pledge to is no small issue in a country where less than half of adults can correctly name the three branches of government.

I posted this same diary with a poll on dailykos.

Some people would prefer to not pledge under God, some would prefer not to pledge at all, but almost all of those willing to pledge would prefer to make their pledge directly to the Constitution and to the Republic for which the flag stands.

All these options are guaranteed under the Constitution.

I believe in a God that believes in the Constitution.
