A New Place in Time

Several weeks ago, a new report by the National Petroleum Council was delivered to Energy Secretary Bodeman. The report is entitled "Facing the Hard Truths about Energy." The NPC report, two years in preparation, is in response to a request from the US Secretary of Energy.

According to Kenneth Deffeyes,,”many of the NPC report's authors are from the major oil companies. The overall chairman of the study is Lee Raymond, former chairman of ExxonMobil. The chairman of the oil supply subcommittee is David O'Reilly, CEO and Chairman of the Board of Chevron”.

As you might imagine, this report is an oil and gas report, and as so, it sees more carbon and more instability in the supply lines that provide those carbon fuels well into the next three decades.

I thought about writing a critique of the report and its lack of vision, but others will do that. . Kenneth Deffeyes, the author of Hubberts Curve, provides a brief overview of the report and some of its shortcomings from his Beyond Oil web site.

So, rather than focus on the lack of vision of those who aren’t exactly in the vision business in the first place, it seems more profitable to visualize the kind of energy system that we need in order to respond to the real problems that lay before us.

Lately I have characterized that system as the Unified Photonic Energy Web.

At my utility, we have about 700,000 customers and we sell about 12,000 GWhs of energy a year. If each one of our customers had a 10 KW photonic conversion device (about 1000 square feet), we would see about 17 MWhs a year in production from each of them.

All together, our customers would then be providing the 12,000 GWhs the community presently uses.

Of course this photonic energy would be arriving mostly in the summer and in the afternoons, so we would need to store it for the proverbial rainy days.

The most advanced energy storage devices that store electrical energy are called ultra capacitors. One developer claims that they can store about 17 KWhs of energy per cubic foot.

Using that standard then, we would need about 2 million cubic feet to store one days worth of energy. That would require a building about 200 feet by 200 feet about five stories tall. If we wanted to store 5 days of energy for the city we would need five of these big boxes. We could probably even use existing depreciated big box stores.

In a preferred embodiment though, we would want perhaps 20 or 30 much smaller solid state storage buildings scatted throughout the community, probably next to our main substations.

And what would be the costs?

If advanced third or fourth generation PV can reach the 1 dollar a watt threshold and if the cost goals of the ultra cap designers can be met, the total cost of such a Unified Photonic Energy Web would be around 14 billion dollars. Half of it would be in photon conversion the other half in storage.

That’s a hefty number.

But we already spend almost a billion dollars a year right now.

With a good interest rate, and a 20 year amortization period, we could pay the interest and the principle with a revenue stream of perhaps 1.2 billion. And energy bills would remain flat for those 20 years. As photonic material science continues to develop, we could actually see a decline in rates thereafter.

In order to include the transportation sector, we would need to double these numbers, and we would need to develop a new generation of electrical vehicles. Maybe some would be plug in hybrids, maybe some would be all electric.

Maybe we would choose to develop and adopt an advanced form or strategy of transportation that actually reduces our need to own a car.

Think about it.

If we were to truly focus our energies and our imaginations, we could have an unified photonic energy web that runs our cars and homes and shops. With this large scale capacitance in the system, energy delivery would be dependable and its quality would be superlative.

With a well balanced blend of wind energy, photonic energy, and the fleet of fossil fueled relics of the past age, we could have a sustainable, non carbon emitting energy system that is as advanced as the quantum theory and nano science that makes it possible.

We cannot allow those who have brought climate change, war, and deadly pollution to our table to continue their profit taking ways. They risk our well being, and perhaps our very survival.

Someday, enough of us will know this truth,

And we will make it happen.

And these Monarchs of Commerce

Will watch in wonder

As history passes them by,

and we find a new place in time.

The Photonic Energy Web

At breakfast this morning,

I mentioned to my travel colleague that yesterday's post

called for a "Unified Photonic Solid State Energy Web".

I told him that not that long ago,

I spoke of the Solar Hydrogen Economy.

But today, I see more emphasis on a muscled up electrical grid

that receives energy from many sources and many places.

Every roof and wall structure that sees sufficient photon bombardment

will be coated with power paints that convert some of those photons

into electrons.

Every skyscraper and office building will have glass coverings

with laser etched coatings,

that block the sunlight from the inside, (if necessary)

and convert many of these photons

into electrons.

Every highway, road, and rail bed will be coated with surfaces

which not only cool the road, they provide the energy

for the new age of personal transportation devices, PRTs and trains

that induct energy from charging plates inbedded in rest stops,

at red lights, and in the rail bed itself.

Every parking meter will also have an inductive charging plate

that can instantly bring the PTD to "full ready".

The Unified Photonic Solid State Energy Web,

will be as smart as it is powerful, fully capable of powering

an advanced civilization that has said goodbye to our

burning fires.

Over the years, I have heard respectable fire worshipping technobes

say something like this;

"It would be great to have everything running on the sun,

but the sun doesn't shine all the time."

I just look at them with that raised eyebrow look.

"It doesn't? I wasn't aware of that."

The statement is similiar to those who say that

"solar does not match our electrical peak".

If you build the plant 500 miles to the west,

it matches it pretty well.

Buckminster Fuller used to talk about a Global Electrical Grid,

a grid that would transport the energy that falls to this good earth,

every day, every hour, every moment,

to wherever it was needed.

Imagine a nonpolluting, sustainable, unified photonic energy web

that allows for a new culture, and a new civilization;

A world culture that would consider the invasion of others

to control their resources as truly barbaric behavior, and

as culturally acceptable

as cannibalism.

Imagine a new civilization based on the best tools

that humankind can create,

not the most destructive weapons it can employ.

Imagine a new world run solely on the energy of our Sun.

No longer would the World Soul be enslaved by the Karma

of the dead bones and flesh we liberate through our fires,

For we will have transcended those old bones,

and moved boldly towards the sublime.

Live where we live

Rather than spending a lot of time wondering just how long our species can go on without taking some serious left turns from our present hell bent course of destruction, I find that my energy is better invested in actually trying to imagine what a carbon constrained, climate change challenged world might really look like.

And, I'm not talking about the "eve of destruction" stuff that you find in many peak oil sites. No, I'm talking more about the kind of policies and the kind of cultural changes that we will need to make in order to not only dramatically reduce our carbon emissions, but to also begin to mine the carbon that we have placed into the biosphere back into a sequestered place.

As bad as many would have us believe it's going to be, (there will be some convulsions) many of the changes that we will need to make don't sound that bad, and in many ways, they might be downright good for us.

For example, the consumer society as we know it will simply have to be transformed. If a good is made, it will have to be what its name implies... GOOD. No longer will we be able to allow the planned obsolescence mentalilty that currently prevails in the marketplace. If something is made, then it will need to be made in such a way that it lasts or can be easily transformed.

That means everything that we build, our cars, our homes, our tools, will have to be made to persevere, be easily upgraded, or completely recycled. The manufacturing maxims of the "age of waste" will clearly need to be substituted with a new ethic which strangely enough sounds very much like the so called protestant ethic that existed just a half a century ago.

Many of us still remember those times.

Instead of buying closets full of cheap oil based threads, which require energy to make, and will, in time, release their carbon to the environment, we will go back to natural fibers which actually mine the carbon out of the air. Wool and Cotton fabrics will be seen as superior "carbon mining" fabrics. We will save our sweaters, and our shirts, and our wool suits in hopes that they can passed down to our children or grandchildren. I still have and cherish my grandfather's super soft sweater that he gave me 40 years ago.

Virtually nothing should go into our dumps.

As I mentioned in a previous post, we will have to rethink the use of concrete and concrete blocks, and instead move towards building materials that do not have large amounts of carbon based energy embedded in their manufacture. We will need to build homes and offices out of the carbon that is mined from the air, and these structures will need to last for hundreds of years. Tearing down a house would be virtually unthinkable.

Our cars, or whatever we use for personal transporation, will last for 20 years.

Our glassware and our dishware will be made to last for generations.

Silverware will be polished and kept in a special place.

In my view, this all sounds pretty civilized and very much like it used to be before we took that sharp far right turn about 6 decades ago, when we allowed ourselves to be hoodwinked into thinking that we are consumers, instead of humanbeings.

The only problem of course is this.

What do we do with the 12 billion square feet of retail that we have covered the landscape with? (The French have a tenth as much retail per capita as the US does) Perhaps we can turn them into dance studios and indoor gardens.

On the energy side of things,

Our homes and offices will be zero energy structures

Their surfaces will be covered with new age photonic materials,

that have been created from the carbon in our air.

These advanced structures will seemlessly integrate themselves

into the photonic web.

That photonic web, our personal transporation device, (if we have one)

and the entire built environment will meld into a unified whole.

The concept of "fuel" will disappear,

as we learn to power all of our tools, toys, and extensions

with the light of creation.

Polluting the air will be as civilized

as taking a crap on a busy sidewalk.

And just like the other more advanced species,

we will finally reform ourselves from

destroying everyone's habitat,

including our own.

And we will

"Live where we live",

In the Creation.

Photonic Plastic Peace

While the US wastes 300 million dollars a day on the War to get Oil, not including the 1.2 billion a day we spend on a defense department, (that apparently can't defend itself from six goof balls who can't even burn a CD on their own) others are working on a truly positive defense by making tools of peace. Here's the story of another milestone in plastic solar cells.

Cheap plastic solar cells are now closer to becoming a reality thanks to a team of U.S. scientists at the Wake Forest University Center for Nanotechnology and Molecular Materials. The researchers announced last month they had pushed the efficiency of plastic solar cells to more than 6 percent.

That percentage may not seem like a huge landmark compared to a photovoltaic (PV) cell achieving an efficiency rating of say 40.7 percent, which was the milestone attained by Spectrolab, Inc. in December 2006. But until two years ago, the highest efficiency ever achieved for plastic solar cells was just three percent.

"Within only two years we have more than doubled the 3 percent mark," Carroll said. "I fully expect to see higher numbers within the next two years, which may make plastic devices the photovoltaic of choice."

Because they are inexpensive and light weight, especially in comparison to traditional silicon solar panels, researchers have worked for years to create flexible, or "conformal," organic solar cells that can be wrapped around surfaces, rolled up or even painted onto structures.

In a paper published in the journal Applied Physics Letters, the Wake Forest researchers describe how they have achieved record efficiency for organic or flexible, plastic solar cells by creating "nano-filaments" within light absorbing plastic, similar to the veins in tree leaves. This allows for the use of thicker absorbing layers in the devices, which capture more of the sun's light." more

Not counting the Wars in the mideast, the geographic state of the United States spends a half a trillion a year on its War machine. If they spent the same as Great Britain or Russia or France or China, the budget would be in balance and billions could be applied to these tools of peace instead of our senseless weapons of war.

Using oil to propel an army to procure even more oil is a strategy for calamity and financial ruin.

Using oil to make inexpensive plastic photon to electron coatings and paints, instead of burning it in our transportation sector might very well be the strategy to a Unified Photonic Energy Web.

More War for more oil and more climate change

Vision 2020

The other day while at a technology meeting, someone characterized me as my company's resident visionary. Being a visionary is not all its cracked up to be. You have to be optimistic and yet at the same time, realistic about the progress that humankind is capable of.

Today, I had a working lunch with a board member of the Renewable Energy Association I co-founded 20 something years ago. As chair of the Vision 2020 Committee, I have so far limited the Committee's activities to a fine night of dining and drinking and talking.

It was a good night with everyone having their chance to speak their piece. Having done that though, the board thought we needed something a little less ethereal.

Here is my first shot at the Vision 2020 Statement. It should not be confused with the end product that the board will ultimately adopt.

Vision 2020 Version 2.1

One would be tempted to say that the world of energy is changing as it has never changed before. And perhaps it is true that the combined global forcing agents of climate change and looming resource depletion will cause a sea change in the energy world that has not been seen for a century, if ever.

There are many in the energy business who have watched the petroleum based infrastructure of the transportation sector and the carbon based stationary generation sector remain somewhat a technological constant during their entire careers.

Combined cycle plants and combustion turbines have constantly improved their heat rates, just as many automotive manufacturers have constantly improved their mileage and power. There have been thousands of advancements over the last 80 years in both sectors, but, in the big picture, nothing has really changed.

Electric companies still make electricity the same way they always have, and car companies still make cars pretty much the same way they always did.

A seasoned energy professional would therefore find it pretty hard to believe that things are going to drastically change in these sectors. But the seasoned Ferrier in the early part of the last century probably had a hard time imagining that his trade was on the verge of extinction.

Things do change, and every now and then they change a lot, and they change in a hurry. It is this vision of change that drives the following Vision 2020 statement.

Vision 2020 Version 2.1

In the next 20 years, we envision the following:

The World will initiate efforts to curb global warming first through cap and trade measures, then it will inact a global carbon emission premium as cap and trade programs fail to achieve the required reductions.

Some governments will initiate carbon controls and they will attempt to regulate the carbon emissions of individuals and companies through emission allotments.

World trade will be complicated and constrained by these various carbon emission regimes.

National Renewable Energy Portfolio requirements will be inacted which will call for perhaps 25% of all energy to come from Renewable Energy.

Existing State Renewable Energy Portfolio requirements will continue to be amended and increased.

Wind Energy will enjoy unprecedented growth into the next decade.

Biomass energy will begin to compete and grow in market share in the very near term.

More and more smart grid control systems will emerge providing even more efficient use of the electric infrastructure.

Telecommuting and telework will grow as the "office" morphs into a virtual office as we redefine our work habits.

Large scale solar plants will begin to be deployed by the end of this decade and they will become the energy of choice for the next 10 years.

Advanced second and third generation distributed solar will be deployed by utilities and end users at growth rates that will overcome all other energy sources by 2020.

After 2020, all new energy will be photonic.

At that point, a Unified Photonic Energy Web, complete with large scale capacitance, will emerge. It will unite the transportation sector with the electric sector, and all other forms of carbon energy will be decomissioned and phased out.

And the age of carbon will have ended."

I suspect that there will be a few folks on that board that may have something to say about this. Some will want windpower to last until every last hillside is covered. Some will want biomass and biofuels to continue, even as the need for food becomes critical. Some will want to build solar power plants past 2020 even though their time will have passed.

But in my view, if we are going to make it, this is the road we need to take.

The Fourth Year

A friend and reader emailed me recently and asked me how much longer I would continue to do this blog. She wrote,

"So what about replacing yourself with several people. So what about soliciting your most interesting writers from your favorite blogs to come over and do one day a week? So what about the blog becoming a sort of magazine? And you write one day a week and manage the schedule?

You probably need to get untied from the daily responsibility so that other creative opportunities can be possible. Remember evolution... periods of homeostasis, plateaus of no change, and then boom! big change, big change, big change..... free yourself up so you will be able to be in the place most useful with the energy to take on an elephant."

In fact, I get a lot of help with this effort. Just look at the poetry section below and you can see how much SB has contributed. Respectisthehub has pitched in too. And concerned folks like David T. send me their letters, which I often use. Some folks send me pictures, some send me videos.

But given that I just spent three hours updating Contents III, perhaps my pal has a point.
